This post spans two organisations – the post is commission and funded by the Ellison Institute of Transformative Medicine, based in Los Angeles and now expanding into Oxford, and will initially be based at the Rhodes Trust.

 

About the Ellison Institute

The Ellison Institute of Transformative Medicine is expanding upon its existing collaborations with the University of Oxford by building a 320,000ft2 research institute and medical clinic at the nearby Oxford Science Park. In addition to this investment, the Institute seeks to fund 10-20 scholarships for undergraduate study at the University of Oxford along with cutting-edge programming both in Oxford and in LA.

The Ellison Scholars Programme is looking to select outstanding young people around the world who are passionate about their subjects and who are motivated to have a lasting impact on technology that benefits others.

 

About the Rhodes Trust

The Rhodes Trust is an educational charity which offers Rhodes Scholarships to exceptional students from around the world to come and study at the University of Oxford. Their mission is to build a better world through global fellowship programmes that develop and connect compassionate, innovative, and public-spirited people committed to solving humanity’s challenges. ​

In recent years, they have also partnered with several other remarkable organisations to create the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, the Atlantic Institute, the Schmidt Science Fellows, and their most recent initiative called RISE. They are now partnering with the Ellison Institute of Transformative Medicine, based in LA and expanding into Oxford, to deliver a new scholarship for undergraduate study at the University of Oxford.

 

The Role

The Ellison Scholars Team is looking to recruit an Outreach and Communications Manager to be responsible for all externally facing communications, to manage the annual communications and outreach timeline, and to mount effective outreach campaigns that attract applications from outstanding young people globally who meet the Ellison scholarship selection criteria. The Ellison Scholars team is small; the breadth of this role is therefore wide and involves both leadership and execution.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce, lead and manage the communications and outreach strategies for the Ellison Scholars Programme – both internally and externally.
  • Manage and own an annual timeline for communications and outreach for the scholarship that covers both external audiences and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the communications teams across the Ellison Institute, the University of Oxford and the Rhodes Trust to ensure consensus and a joined-up approach, where needed – for example for press releases.
  • Broaden the network of contacts and organisations that could source eligible applicants for the scholarship – particularly with a focus on technology.
  • Produce, edit and publish high quality content that is engaging to target audiences and is on brand for the programme and the Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine.
  • Work with external communications and content generation organisations to produce top quality media and content for externally facing audiences, ensuring that the content is accessible to a global and diverse audience.
  • Work with the scholarship recipients to coordinate photographs and video content that clarifies the initiative and inspires potential applicants.
  • Manage the scholarship website and social media channels – ensuring accuracy and also that content is regularly refreshed and updated, ensuring the externally facing content is polished, accessible and engaging.
  • Work with the legal team to ensure careful wording of externally facing content.
  • Work to produce high quality and attention-grabbing content, particularly for key milestone moments – for example the announcement of the selected Ellison Scholars.
  • Seek and analyse feedback to ensure that the communications and outreach are delivering as desired and continuously improving, and stay up-to-date on how best to reach talented young people, globally.

 

Person Specification

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Significant experience in communications and outreach – spanning at least 5 years, preferably for values-driven organisations or initiatives similar to the Ellison Scholars programme.
  • Previous experience of leading and managing communications, including creating and running a communications or outreach strategy.
  • A portfolio of content self-produced and / or of content that has been coordinated and curated, though produced externally.
  • An innovative and fresh approach to communication – creativity with an awareness of the level of polish required for external content, particularly when connected to high profile organisations, such as the Ellison Institute, the University of Oxford and the Rhodes Trust.
  • A willingness to innovate and try new things to ensure that the programme’s communications do not become staid or monotonous.
  • An ability to easily create rapport with new contacts and organisations and to joint he dots between the programme’s needs and aspirations and what organisations are doing.
  • Project planning and management experience – an ability to deliver work well in advance of key deadlines.
  • An ability to produce erudite written and graphic content where needed and where not provided by external organisations.
  • An ability to source and create content that sums up the Ellison Scholars aims and aspirations, whilst ensuring that the opportunity remains ‘approachable’ to potential applicants.  
  • Values-based, collaborative working style with demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality
  • Experience of managing an annual cycle of communications, with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience of producing communications or conducting outreach with a global audience.
  • Experience of delivering multifaceted projects with multiple stakeholders on time and within budget.
  • During peak periods, some longer hours may be required and some working across multiple time zones due to the global nature of the programme.
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Be based in Oxford (or within easy commuting distance), or willing to move to Oxford and be able to travel to the U.S. and internationally as/if needed, and according to guidance on safe travel.

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of producing and managing content for younger audiences (especially 16-18-year olds)
  • Experience of starting a new initiative – from design to delivery and improvement.
  • Knowledge or expertise in technology as a field or subject discipline.

 

Terms of Appointment

Subject to a satisfactory probationary period of 3 months, this is a permanent role. You must be eligible to work in the UK with a willingness to travel occasionally and as necessary. The need may arise for additional hours to be worked. Time off in lieu may be arranged with your line manager as appropriate. As the Ellison Institute’s expansion continues in Oxford, this role may be transferred to employment by the UK-based Ellison organisation.
